20.000 YEMENIS BENEFITED CLEAN WATER

Due to the civil war which marks its 5 year, the country's most important needs which are drinking water and irrigation systems became unusable. 12 million people cannot be able reach clean water in the country. The threat of hunger caused by serious infectious diseases and inability to irrigate agricultural areas also increases the risk of death.

The International Blue Crescent Relief and Development Foundation (IBC) launched 16 solar water well projects in 2019 in Yemen in partnership with Canadian based organisation,IDRF. Through the Project, 20.000 Yemenis will able to reach clean water…

Yemen's vast farmland, thousands of villages and towns are deprived of their greatest need which are clean drinking water and irrigation resources.

According to data from the United Nations, 1 out of 3 people in the country with a population of 28 million cannot reach regular clean water resources. 80 percent of this number, which equals to 12 million people, needs to reach clean water urgently.

Only 22 percent of the population in rural areas, and 46 percent in cities can benefit from water network systems. Pumps in water wells have become unusable over the years as they cannot be operated due to rising fuel prices. Due to the limited water resources, the hygienic problem that occurs as a result of lack of water brings and the growth of fatal epidemics such as cholera.

The International Blue Crescent (IBC), in partnership with IDRF, a Canadian aid organization, will open 16 solar water wells in 3 different states and deliver clean drinking water to approximately 20,000 Yemenis.

Within the scope of the project, which started in February 2019, 5 well systems were put into service in Shabwa and Hadramud states at the end of June 2019. In the second half of the year, works are getting started to operate 11 different wells. By the end of November, 4 more wells were drilled in Hadramud and Al Mahra states and started to produce clean water. By February 2020, six more wells will be put into service.

Due to the fact that there is sufficient daylight in the country to supply solar energy systems throughout the year, the batteries that the systems are connected may able to  generate electricity for years without any problems. With this system, it is possible to provide long-term clean water from a depth of approximately 130-150 meters to 180 meters from the underground for years.
