Nepal suffered by a devastating earthquake hit mainly districts east of Kathmandu and devastated hundreds of villages across the mountains and the Pohkara Valley. More than 20000 people lost their lives and around 65000 injured.

International Blue Crescent responded to the needs of earthquake victims through emergency provision of food and hygiene materials in three districts Bkahtapur, Sindhupalchock and Makawanpur.

Local partner of IBC,the Siddhi Foundation provided IBC with the assesment in the field and IBC staff managed its own and beneficiaries identified among those mainly applied to the Siddhi Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment.

Most of them were children lost their families or women lost their husbands and take refugee together with their children to the hospital terrain.

IBC through UMCOR funding support and coordination with Siddhi foundation identified the most vulnerable 1000 families given priority to those taken refugee to the hospital and in the most disadvantaged position in temporary barracks established all over the three towns.

Distribution organised in coordination with the local authorities and Siddhi Foundatişon and implemented through groups of 100 families each time.

Because the difficulties of transport and vulnerability criterias it took a little bit longer to list the beneficiarties and organise them on specific dates and distribution hubs.

This we managed to overcome through the main listing of the Siddhi Foundation and local authorities from where we selected the most vulnerable.

Transport conditions were very bad because some roads collapsed, the mountainous landscape made more difficult the access to these affected districts.

The composition of the packages(food and hygiene) was decided in cooperation with the beneficiaries themselves who reported their basic needs and according to the nutrition and hygiene habits of the local people

Finally thorugh the UMCOR supported Project 1000 families managed to overcome their hygiene and food needs at least for a month and have some time to reorganise thier family system for survival.

IBC is completing an assesment for the reconstruction of at least three villages in Bakhtapour district through SELF HELP HOUSING program and started to campaign for that.
