CHAD: A COUNTRY IN HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

The conflict that has been going on in Sudan for months is creating a butterfly effect and affecting its neighbours. Chad, a country affected at least as much as Sudan by the ongoing unrest and facing an intense wave of migration, is struggling with a great humanitarian crisis.

In the nearly two years since war broke out in Sudan, almost one million people have fled into neighbouring Chad, including more than 720,000 Sudanese refugees and more than 220,000 Chadians who returned home because of the conflict.

Chad has experienced very high levels of migration due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Chad hosted around a third of newly displaced Sudanese refugees in 2024, bringing the world’s largest displacement crisis to one of the world’s poorest countries. This situation has aggravated the problems of shelter, water and food. Already limited resources are no longer able to meet the needs of an irregularly growing population. According to a recent screening, 28% of children under five in the refugee camps are acutely malnourished. This is well above the WHO emergency threshold of 15%, indicating a severe crisis.

The ongoing mass migration of Sudanese refugees into Chad, where resources are relatively more concentrated, is aggravating the current humanitarian crisis. In response to the current situation in both countries, our Foundation, in collaboration with IDRF Canada, has distributed food parcels to 400 families living in refugee camps in eastern Chad.

We have taken important steps to increase our support for the people of Chad. To find lasting solutions to the humanitarian crisis in the country, our Middle East and North Africa Programme Manager Mohamed Ouahi, IDRF Canada Operations Director Nabil Ali and Dr. Daïrou Youssouf SIDIKI, President of the national NGO APCD, met with the Secretary General of the Ministry, Mr. Mahamat Abdelkerim Bagari, representing the Minister of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. Fatimé Boukar Kossei, to discuss ways of working with vulnerable groups, disaster victims and refugees in Chad.

We are determined to continue our work to address humanitarian crises and strengthen emergency response.
